Crafting with clay: My journey into polymer clay modelling

Updated: Nov 7, 2023

The saying "creativity knows no boundaries" couldn't be more true. Lately, I've been exploring the world of polymer clay modelling, and it has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for me. As someone new to this craft, I'm sure you can relate to the excitement and wonder that comes with each squish and mould. Through this blog, I hope to share my polymer clay adventures with you. This platform serves as my canvas for everything that I do in terms of arts, crafts, nature, and adventure.

The beginning:

I recently discovered the world of polymer clay modelling and found it to be a treasure trove of creativity waiting to be explored. What started as a simple curiosity quickly turned into a full-fledged hobby.

As a beginner in this craft, I have come to realise that it requires a combination of patience, precision, and an adventurous spirit. Learning from fellow crafters and enthusiasts has been an invaluable part of my journey. The online community of polymer clay artists is a great source of inspiration and knowledge.

My recent creations :

Pink ribbon earrings

This is my first design, and although it may be simple handcrafeted product, but I created this item for an important cause - to support breast cancer awareness month. I have sold a few of these online and have also gifted them to some of my customers, family, and friends so that they too can show their support.

Jack o Lantern charm and Spooky Bat name pin

I followed a YouTube vlogger tutorial to create this clay model design. I greatly admire her crafts, and video tutorials are easy to follow. The design looks difficult if you look at the final product, but it’s really easy to make and follow. Kudos, and thank you for the Vlogger for great work. Here is the link to her tutorial.

Poppy stud earrings and pin

My mother asked me to create poppy earrings and pin for her. In Australia, two holidays are observed where this symbol is worn, Remembrance Day and Anzac Day, to honour the soldiers who sacrificed their lives for a noble cause. I made these cute stud earrings for her using a silicone mould and decided to sell the remaining ones online. If you're interested, you can find them at the links below.

Kaola bear charm

This is my second handcrafted clay design inspired by a koala illustration I found online. Although it didn't turn out the way I expected, I know it needs improvement. I consider this version a beta of the koala bear design and plan to make improvements in the future.

Kawai ghosts earrings

I inadvertently created this handcrafted clay design of a ghostly figure while playing around with clay. Using a ball tool, I fashioned a dress-like effect. However, I made a mistake and overbaked the clay, which resulted in it appearing burnt. To try to salvage it, I decided to paint it with white acrylic paint, but I didn't like the way it turned out.

Ghost face scream earrings

To make these dangled earrings with screaming ghost faces, I used pre-made cutters to cut polymer clay. As a beginner, I made several mistakes initially while cutting the clay, but I discovered a technique for cutting it precisely without ruining the design. I have made only 20 pairs of these earrings, and they are available for purchase on my Etsy store.

Snowman charm

My uncle Joy gave me some valuable advice on creating handcrafted Christmas designs in advance to sell in my Etsy store. So, I decided to draw a traditional snowman design today while singing "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" by Agatha Lee Monn, Katie Lopez, and Kristen Bell. After that, I started working on creating the clay version, which is still in beta. It just dawned on me that I have never actually built a snowman before, so I'm adding it to my 100 Bucket List before Dooms Day.

My challenges and triumphs:

As a newcomer, I've faced my fair share of challenges, from achieving the right consistency in the clay to adding intricate details to my designs. However, every obstacle presents an opportunity for triumph. The feeling of accomplishment when a creation comes to life is incredibly rewarding.

So what's next?

I have just begun my journey into polymer clay modelling, and I am excited to explore new techniques, experiment with colours and textures, and share my progress with everyone. Throughout my journey, I will also be featuring tutorials and tips that I learn along the way so we can all learn and grow together.

Whether you are a seasoned polymer clay artist or someone who has never worked with clay before, I invite you to join me on this creative adventure. Together, we will explore the endless possibilities of polymer clay modelling and discover the joy of bringing our imaginations to life in vibrant, colourful form.

Stay tuned for more clay creations, tips, and occasional crafting mishaps as I embrace the world of polymer clay modelling with open arms.
